Blu-ray or Blu-ray Disc (BD) is adigitaloptical disc data storage format. It was designed tosupersede theDVD format, in that it is capable of storinghigh-definition (720pand 1080p) and ultra high-definition videoresolution (2160p). Theplastic disc is 120 mm in diameter and 1.2mm thick, the same sizeas DVDs and CDs.[5] Conventional (pre-BD-XL)Blu-ray Disc discscontain 25 GB per layer, with dual layer discs(50 GB) being theindustry standard for feature-length video discs.Triple-layerdiscs (100 GB) and quadruple layers (128 GB) areavailable forBD-XL re-writer drives.[6] The name "Blu-ray" refersto the bluelaser (specifically, a violet laser) used to read thedisc, whichallows information to be stored at a greater densitythan ispossible with the longer-wavelength red laser used for DVDs.Themain application of Blu-ray is as a medium for video materialsuchas feature films and physical distribution of video games forthePlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Besides thehardwarespecifications, Blu-ray is associated with a set ofmultimediaformats.
